Tom Reed Heads into Memorial Day Attacking a Lifetime of Service

Most recently, Tom Reed doubled down on his previous attacks, criticizing John's work while serving on a nonpartisan science fellowship and as a Military Legislative Assistant to Senator Ken Salazar, a position John left in order to deploy to Middle East. Reed attacked John's service at the Pentagon calling it political. While John was serving shoulder to shoulder with his fellow service members and civilians in the Pentagon and the National Security Council − Republicans and Democrats alike − Tom Reed repeatedly placed politics above our national security.

While Commander Plumb was working to keep our country safe, Congressman Reed was one of only two New York state members of Congress that voted to shut down the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The danger of Reed’s vote was summarized in a letter from his New York State Republican colleagues, which stated “DHS is critical to our national security. ISIS is a real threat to America and we must provide full funding to keep New York and our country safe.”

As Reed faced strong condemnation from local veterans earlier this week for his attacks against Commander Plumb’s service, he doubled down by attacking John’s work at the Pentagon and his deployment to the Middle East.

Reed’s desperate attacks are drawing the attention of fellow veteran Members of Congress. On Wednesday, Congressman Seth Moulton – a veteran U.S. Marine – called out Reed for “unfairly ripping opponent’s military service.”

U.S. Naval Reserve Commander John Plumb, 4th generation Western New Yorker and candidate for Congress in New York’s 23rd district, released the following statement:

“My entire career has been focused on our national security and keeping Americans safe. The fact that Tom Reed thinks it is possible to blur the lines of service shows how little Reed knows about the military, the Pentagon, and the men and women who choose to serve their nation every day.

“I am proud of my 22 years of service advancing our national security at home and abroad, including my 15 years in the Navy Reserve where I currently still serve – and voters in Western New York, the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes will not stand by as a desperate Reed disparages my service and the service of all of us who have answered the nation's call.”
