John Plumb Launches Campaign for Congress in NY-23
“Growing up in rural Western New York, you can’t help but appreciate how special it is here,” Plumb said. “I was raised with the same core values that run deep through the Southern Tier and its surrounding areas: hard work, independent thinking, and a dedication to family, community and country. It’s because of the core values I learned here that I first signed up to serve our country in the Navy. And it’s because of these same core values that I’m seeking the honor of serving our communities in Congress.”
“Across our district, I’ve heard from too many families who feel Washington just isn’t listening to the rural communities of Western New York, the Southern Tier, and the Finger Lakes region – and they are right. Year after year, our middle class and working families find it harder and harder to get ahead, and our small cities and towns feel increasingly left behind. Our Congress is an embarrassment right now – too many politicians are more interested in scoring cheap political shots than acting on the very real problems confronting our communities and the country.”
“The 23rd district deserves a representative with the courage to put our region and our country before politics. That’s what I’ve done my entire career: put ideology aside and worked together for the best interests of our country. And my focus has always been on getting things done, not standing in place to talk and talk about problems instead of taking action. In the military we are taught early on that just talking about a problem isn’t leadership, it’s complaining. Real leaders identify real solutions and then work to implement them - because it is results that matter. If elected to Congress, I will work with representatives regardless of party on the issues that matter most to finally get real results for our rural communities.”
After serving as a submarine officer in the U.S. Navy, John continued a career focused on addressing some of our nation’s pressing national security challenges, including serving as Principal Director of Nuclear and Missile Defense Policy at the U.S. Department of Defense and most recently as a Director of Defense Policy and Strategy on the National Security Council staff. He has continued to serve in the Navy Reserves, and currently holds the rank of Commander. John has received several awards from his military service, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. He has also received awards from the Departments of Defense, State, and Energy for his work as a civilian public servant. He holds an undergraduate degree in Physics and a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering.
In Congress, John will bring a fresh, independent, problem-solving mentality, and the same fierce devotion to duty that has characterized his entire life.
